The Ugly Pool Guy, Brian Morris, President of We Fix Ugly Pools is undertaking the challenge of an truly incredibly backyard makeover. Live Streaming Video of World Record Build at www.worldrecordpoolbuild.com

August 1st, 2007, The Ugly Pool Guy and We Fix Ugly Pools will be taking a simple backyard from Ugly to Awesome in under 16 hours.

Project to include:

1) Full construction of an in-ground swimming pool. From excavation to swimmable!

Features include:

a. color changing light

b. energy efficient pump and filter

c. salt chlorination system

d. automation with remote control ability

2) The pool will include “green build” items such as a pool cover and solar heating. The covers help to control water loss, minimize
chemical usage and control maintenance. Covers are also being recognized as one of the safest barriers available for swimming pools.

3) A water feature will compliment the pool and create an addition to the backyard environment.

4) Backyard landscaping: Water conserving landscaping will be the focus of the surrounding areas of the backyard.

5) Interactive children’s area: To compliment the pool construction and landscaping, an area is being created to ensure that children have an area to interact and enjoy outdoor activities. A play system, based with the safety of the children in mind, will entice the imagination. The base product will utilize recycled rubber tires.

Live streaming video will be available on our website for a continual viewing of the project as it proceeds.

Electric lifts will be on site to allow for the photography of the construction from a bird’s eye view above the construction.

What is so unique about this pool build is that we are expecting to complete construction in 16 hours of less (that includes DIGGING the pool to WATER IN THE POOL!) PLUS landscaping and a play system.

We are honored to invite you to participate in the event to add to the aesthetic and safety aspect of backyard construction that is so important during a new construction or renovation. While our focus appears to be on speed, we are dedicated to the quality and the safety of our finished product as well. The homeowner has small children which will be our focus of concern throughout the construction.

Every swimming pool contains a combination of chemicals - anyone that has ever been in a swimming pool will know this. In fact, anyone who has ever been near a swimming pool will recognise the strange odour that wafts through the air! This smell is caused by swimming pool chemicals that are added to every public and private swimming pool as a matter of course.

Swimming pool chemicals are generally chlorine based and come into a variety of forms. Chlorine has distinct properties that attack germs and bacteria that may build up in a pool. Concentrated chlorine can actually damage human cells, especially mucus membrane like the eyes; however in its dilute form it does not prove to be as harmful. The chlorine is carried around the pool via the water molecules and can protect patrons of the pool for at least a couple of weeks before it needs replenishing.

Chlorine and other swimming pool chemicals are essential elements of any pool. Not only does the chlorine kill harmful germs and bacteria, but it also has properties that neutralize and cleanse other, ahem, less savoury substances. Anyone that has seen a “Don’t pee in the pool” sign will know what I am talking about.

Although chlorine is the common swimming pool chemical used, a good percentage of individuals are actually allergic to it. Alternatives has been created, and non-chlorine swimming pool chemicals are now commonly available. They come in several forms. Bromine is commonly used, as is oxy shock. The latter is an oxygen product, potassium mono peroxy sulphate, that is actually odourless and does not tend to provoke allergic reactions, yet does the same job as chlorine.

You can purchase swimming pool chemicals from a variety of places. There are companies that sell them on the World Wide Web and some companies even operate via mail order for this kind of commodity. However, if you do need some advice then you should first go to the site listed below, then, armed with knowledge, to specialist stores that stock swimming pool chemicals. These include, garden centres, sports stores and home design stores.

You should not underestimate the importance of swimming pool chemicals, especially if it is your pool that requires maintenance. The chemicals are inexpensive, but you should always consider the health benefits that you do get as a result of employing them.

Why? It cannot be argued that swimming pool covers are an essential addition to any pool. No matter what the weather, you’ll want to keep the elements and the debris out of the water, keeping it clean for your family.

Swimming pool covers are heavy - those designed with safety in mind can be especially cumbersome - and easing the process of ravelling and unravelling the large cover may be a priority for many people. Why not opt for an electric swimming pool cover. These electric covers are essentially the same as other covers, but when you want to put them over or drag them off the pool it’s as simple as pressing a button.

Who would use them? Electric covers are often popular in public pools where it must go on every evening, and come off every morning - electricity greatly assists this tedious and difficult process.

But they can be used in the home, too. Unlike with standard manual covers, neither strength nor dexterity is required to use electric swimming pool covers. This makes them ideal for elderly or disabled people, especially those that require frequent dips into the pool for therapeutic reasons. If retracting the cover is too much for some people on their own, then an electric swimming pool cover would be an ideal solution.

How do they work? A motorised pole the turns a reel, either pulling the cover in or pushing it out along rails. The electric pole will be versatile enough to fit a range of pool widths and lengths (and should be easily adjusted by the purchaser or the installer) This increases the choice available for those seeking to buy one, as they are not restricted to a particular make or brand that is made specifically for a certain sized pool.

The aesthetics of the cover will often be more pleasing if electric swimming pool covers are integrated into newly built pools, but if the pool is aleady installed and working, a retro-fit version may be your only choice.

This electric, automated action means that electric swimming pool covers are often referred to as “automatic pool covers”, since they automatically deploy and retract. The two terms can often be used interchangeably, though it is important to note that by ‘automatic’ we do not mean that it performs the action without any prompting. While this behaviour is, conceivably, possible, it is not within the standard function of an electric cover.

This article is an abridged version of the full article on Electric Swimming Pool Covers which is available, along with a useful Swimming Pool Accessories Directory at Lee Armstrong’s site: Swimming Pool Accessories. See you there!

You can have the biggest, fanciest pool in the neighborhood, complete with tiles imported from Italy or painted with cool designs, floating rafts and fed by a gushing fountain, but without one specific piece of equipment, that shimmering pool can turn into a duck pond in about a week flat. What’s that vital piece of equipment? A swimming pool pump is a crucial piece of mechanics that works hard to keep your pool clean.

A swimming pool pump comes in a variety of sizes, shapes and models. Bigger is not always better, however, so knowing something about pumps and what they do will stand you in good stead as you either build your pool or are in the process of replacing old, battered parts. The size and type of swimming pool you own has a lot to do with the type of pool pump you buy, for manufactures make pumps for above ground and in ground pool needs.

Why is a pool pump so important? Because it works with your pool’s filtration system to keep the pool clean of debris. The pump pulls water out of the pool through a skimmer basket and then through the filtering system, and back into the pool. Without the pump, nothing works.

Most types of pumps will state their capacity, so always know what size your pool is before looking for pool equipment. You should know the basic area of your pool as well as how many gallons it holds. Most pumps will designate how much water they can pump either hourly or by the minute.

In most cases, people run a swimming pool pump for six to eight hours a day, especially in the summertime and when the pool is being used. If your pool is small and stays relatively clean, you can cut back that running time in fall and winter months to save electricity.

All pumps should come with some type of straining basket that is designed to catch leaves, sticks, and toys, or whatever else manages to end up in your pool. These baskets can be oblong, square, open or closed, but as long as they keep debris from entering your filtering system, the shape doesn’t matter.

When selecting any particular swimming pool pump model, check the energy efficiency of the unit to make sure you’re getting the best model to suit your needs. Be prepared to spend anywhere from $100 to $700 for a swimming pool pump. Because it is hard to determine how many hours a day you will need to run your pump, it pays to get a good model, which may be more than you want to spend initially. However, the more efficient the pump, the less electricity will be wasted, so it’s up to you where you want to save your money.

When looking for a swimming pool pump, also take into consideration the age of your filtering system. An old system may not be very efficient in filtering water no matter how powerful the pump is, so don’t throw good money after bad. A pump moves the water, it doesn’t clean it. That’s for your filtering system. Carefully watching chemical levels and water clarity, combined with good water circulation, is the best way to achieve good results with your pool.

Solar Pool Covers versus Mesh Freehold Pool Covers: What Is the
Best?

Are you a Freehold resident who is in need of a swimming pool
cover? When it comes to buying a Freehold pool cover, you will
soon see that you have a number of different options. While many
pool owners mistakenly believe that all pool covers are the
same, they actually are not. Two common types of pool covered
purchased by Freehold pool owners include mesh pool covers and
solar pool covers. If you are wondering which Freehold pool
cover is best for you and your pool, you will want to continue
reading on.

When it comes to buying a Freehold pool cover, there are many
pool owners who choose to buy solar pool covers. One of the many
benefits to buying a solar Freehold pool cover is the cost.
Solar pool covers are known as being more affordable than all
other types of pool covers. They are also well known for their
heating capabilities. A Freehold solar pool cover uses the sun’s
rays to help heat a pool. In that aspect, many homeowners can
save money by using a solar Freehold pool cover instead of
purchasing a pool heater.

Although solar Freehold pool covers are popular and affordable,
they do have their downsides. One downside to purchasing a solar
Freehold pool cover is safety. Solar pool covers are known for
their pool heating capabilities, but they are not necessarily
known for their safety. Should you or a child accidentally fall
into your in-ground pool and it was covered with a solar
Freehold pool cover, did you know that you or the child who fell
will continue to sink to the bottom of the pool. In fact, solar
pool covers can even make it harder to get out of a pool
accident.

If you are interested in having your pool heated a little bit by
the sun, you may want to think about buying a solar Freehold
pool cover for your pool. However, if you are more focused on
safety, you may want to look into a mesh Freehold pool cover.
Mesh pool covers are most well-known for their safety. It has
been said that some mesh pool cover can hold weight up to
thousands of pounds. Of course, you are advised not to rely on a
mesh Freehold pool cover to withstand your weight, but it is
nice to know that it could in the event of an accident.

If you are unsure as to what type of Freehold pool cover you
should buy for your in-ground pool, you may actually think to
think about both mesh pool covers and solar pool covers. There
is a way that you can use both. In fact, there are even some
mesh pool covers that are also made with solar absorbing
materials. For more information on which type of Freehold pool
cover you should purchase for your pool, you may want to think
about speaking with a pool safety expert or installer.

Are you a Ramsey resident who is thinking about having a
swimming pool installed in your yard? Whether you are interested
in owning an aboveground pool or an in-ground pool, it is
advised that you buy a pool cover for your new pool.

If this is your first time buying a Ramsey pool cover for your
swimming pool, you may be unsure as to what you should look for
in a pool cover. When it comes to buying a new Ramsey pool
cover, there are a number of important factors that should be
taken into consideration. A few of those factors are outlined
below.

Cleanliness is one factor that should be taken into
consideration, when looking to buy a Ramsey pool cover. As you
likely already know, you will have to clean your pool on
occasion, but if you carefully choose the type of Ramsey pool
cover that you buy, the maintence required should be minimal. A
quality Ramsey pool cover is one that will protect your pool
from the weather and all that it brings with it, like leaves on
a windy day.

In addition to cleanliness, another factor that needs to be
taken into consideration, when looking to buy a Ramsey pool
cover, is safety. If you are a parent or if you live in a
neighborhood that is full of kids, you may want to keep safety
in mind when buying a Ramsey pool cover. In addition to cheap,
traditional pool covers, did you know that you can purchase
safety pool covers? You can. There are actually Ramsey pool
covers that are strong enough to hold the weight of an adult! A
strong and durable Ramsey pool cover is the perfect way to make
sure that your pool is safe for children to be around.

Of course, cost is another factor that needs to be examined,
when looking to buy a Ramsey pool cover. Yes, you will want to
make sure that you find a Ramsey pool cover that you can afford;
however, you may not want price to be the deciding factor. By
purchasing a safety pool cover, you can help to keep your
children safe or reduce the chances of you being held liable for
a pool accident. By purchasing a Ramsey pool cover that comes
highly rated and recommended, in terms of keeping debris out,
you should be able to save yourself a considerable amount of
time, particularly when it comes to the cleaning of your pool.

The above mentioned factors are just a few of the many factors
that you should take into consideration if and when you go to
buy a new Ramsey pool cover. If you are still unsure about which
type of Ramsey pool cover you should purchase, you may want to
think about turning to a professional pool safety expert for
suggestions.

We all enjoy soaking or swimming in a warm crystal clear pool or
hot tub yet at times keeping that sparkle can be a trying
experience. Keeping your pools chemicals in the proper range is
not only necessary to maintain that sparkle but also to keep
your pool or hot tub safe for swimmers. There are three basic
ways to keep your pool clean and safe for swimming the
traditional chlorine system, biguanide and mineral systems each
are safe and effective for use in outdoor pools and hot tubs.
Each system needs to be used independently of the other so which
ever system you start using you must continue to use that
system. You will also need to purchase the proper testing
equipment for your system.

The old standard chlorine is available almost every place from
your local pool supply store to Wal-Mart it is relatively cheap
and easy to monitor and use. The big drawbacks of chlorine are
it is harsh on your skin and can cause bathing suits and hair
color to fade. Stabilized chlorine should be used in a pool or
hot tub that is exposed to sunlight if your spa is inside or is
not in direct sunlight non stabilized chlorine can be used.

The next type of pool sanitizers are the mineral systems these
release minerals such as copper, zinc and silver into the water
to keep the pool or hot tub algae and bacteria free. Generally
the mineral system does use a small amount of chlorine to make
sure the system is efficacious.

The third type of pool sanitizer is the “Bio” type of sanitizers
such as Bioguard and BioDex. These all liquid sanitizers are
very easy to use but they do require a specific testing unit and
can not be used with chlorine. These sanitizers do not have the
same harsh effects of chlorine and do not bleach out hair and
swim suits.

Every type of pool sanitizers requires an oxidizer, the oxidizer
or shock treatment removes the oils, lotions and other unwanted
contaminations form the pool. Not all shock treatments are the
same although monopersulfate which is an oxygen based oxidizer.
Chlorine based shock treatments are also oxygen based. Chlorine
shock should never be used with the Biguanide sanitizing system
uses hydrogen peroxide as the main oxidizer.

No matter what type of sanitizer you use in your pool or hot tub
you need to start with the basics. Make sure your Ph is between
7.4 and 7.6 this prevents corrosion and scale build up and
reduces the irritation to swimmers skin and eyes.

When you are looking for an automatic swimming pool cleaner, you have basically three
types to choose from – skimmer systems, booster-pump systems and in-floor systems. It
doesn’t really matter which one you use as long as you do have a pool cleaner to keep the
water free from debris and harmful bacteria. The automatic cleaners save you a lot of
work, because it is backbreaking work to manually clean a swimming pool and it is
something that has to be done on a regular basis.

With the skimmer systems, the cleaner is connected to a skimmer and uses the suction to
continuously vacuum the pool. It consists of a standard vacuum hose connected to a
skimmer suction that roams all over the bottom or the pool sucking up the large pieces of
dirt and debris. You do have to clean out the strainer because it can get clogged with such
things as leaves that fall into the pool. You can also add a leaf-collecting canister to the
hose to avoid having to do this job too often.

If you want to have a booster-pump pool cleaning system, you have to install a separate
pump that catches the water on its way out of the filter. The pump then turbocharges the
water sending a high pressure of water through a flexible hose that moves about the pool.
Within this type of automatic cleaner there are two varieties – a vacuum head and a
sweep head. The vacuum head cleaner has a catch basin to hold the large pieces of debris
that the cleaner picks up and the sweep head cleaner have long swirling arms that stir up
the water so that the debris goes into a drain where it gets sucked into a basket. The
smaller pieces of dirt get caught in the filter.

The in-floor cleaning systems are actually built into the floor of the pool. This system is
for an in-ground pool because it is put in when the pool is installed. The cleaner consists
of heads that pop up on the bottom of the pool and spray jets of water that force the dirt
towards the main drain of the pool.

Any swimming pool setup requires a pump for filtering and
heating. It is important to make the correct choice when
purchasing a pool pump, and you might not be pleased with your
purchase if you don’t first do your homework.

A swimming pool pump is responsible for circulating water
through heating and filtering unites with efficiency and at the
lowest energy costs as possible. The right pump for your size
and type of pool will achieve this.

Pool maintenance is more involved than assembling parts to pump
water at the correct flow rate. Other factors come into
consideration in order to achieve a system optimized for power
usage and quick circulation.

Before you purchase a new pool pump, try to keep the following
in mind. Make sure the pump you buy as capable designed to
operate efficiently with your size swimming pool. Follow that
one simple rule and you can’t go wrong.

The right pool pump for the job

Even the most efficient pool pump can use up a lot of power, on
the scale of household air conditioning. At an average of about
3/4 horsepower, a swimming pool pump represents a significant
power consuming device. The best strategy is to use one that is
most efficient for your pool size.

The first step is to ensure the pumps capacity is a match for
your pool volume. It might be tempting to buy a larger pump than
is needed. This usually results in only in higher electrical
bill without any benefit to pumping efficiency. A better
strategy is to use a pump that optimize the power and duration
in order to circulate the water in as short amount of time and
with as little power as needed.

Pump functionality

In addition to the correct horsepower, an efficient pump for
your pool will have efficiency ensuring functionality -
regulator and timer functions are highly desirable for achieving
maximum efficiency.

Brand names:

A couple of brand names come to the fore front when it comes to
pull pumps. Most notably, names like Hayward and Intex have
developed state of the art technology in every system they make.
Both of these companies have pumping systems for your pool type
and size. You can consult with these companies directly or with
your local dealer to pick out the right pump for your pool.

Hayward Pool Supply

Hayward is a best of breed when it comes to swimming pool pumps.
Each pump purchased from a Hayward dealer comes with over 80
years experience in swimming pool pumps.

Established in the 1920s, Hayward Pool Supply provides the
industries top pool equipment to this day. Filters, heat pumps,
or any other circulation related items can be purchased from
Hayward for Hayward products, so you know every item is designed
as part of a systematic approach.

Intex Pool Supplies

The Intex Recreational Corp. has been in the business of
swimming pool recreation supplies for over 40 years. Anything
having to do with water fun and sports can be had through Intex.

Intex makes terrific inflatable pool products, swimming gear,
water toys, floating mats, and other fun accessories. In
addition, they are well known for superior quality swimming pool
pumps and sport a large array of pumps for every need your pool
may have.

In conclusion

The first step to swimming pool pump efficiency is to match the
pump with the pool needs. Next is to setup the timer, regulator
or other efficiency features to achieve the lowest possible
power consumption while still getting the job done.
